Home Lockout Service

The key slides in and turns all the way round, but the bolt stays put. There is no click, no resistance, just a key spinning in a lock that has stopped listening to it after years of daily use.

Home Lockout Service

In plain words

Where your key is decides most of what happens after the door opens. If it is sitting on the counter inside, the job is simply to open the door and hand the house back to you with the lock untouched. If the key has been lost somewhere in town, opening the door solves tonight but leaves a working key in circulation, so the sensible follow-up is to rekey the cylinder to a new key while the locksmith is already there. Either way the service begins with confirming you belong at that address and ends with a door that locks and unlocks normally.

How the visit goes

Guelph

How the visit goes

  1. Cold, ice and salt on the hardware

In winter the assessment starts with the weather. A keyway that took on meltwater during a thaw can be frozen solid by morning, and salt spray from a nearby driveway leaves a crust that gums up the pins. The locksmith looks for frost around the cylinder face, tests how far the key seats, and feels whether the plug is stiff from cold grease or genuinely iced. This decides between a gentle thaw with lock de-icer, warming the cylinder, or picking once the ice releases. It also flags hardware that should get a dry lubricant and a weather cover afterwards so the same morning does not repeat next week.

  2. Working a deadbolt open

A thrown deadbolt has no bevel to exploit, so the cylinder itself has to be persuaded. The locksmith applies light rotational tension to the plug and sets each pin to the shear line, or reads the pin heights with a decoder and cuts a key that matches. Some cylinders let the plug turn one way only; a plug spinner flicks it past the point where the tailpiece engages so the bolt can retract. Security pins slow the process rather than stop it. The bolt draws back, the door opens, and the cylinder is cycled with your key afterwards to confirm nothing inside was disturbed by the work.

  3. A door and frame that line up again

When the lockout traced back to a door that had sagged or swollen, you get more than an open door: the reason is dealt with. Hinge screws that had worked loose are tightened or replaced with longer ones that bite into the framing, the strike plate is adjusted or its pocket deepened so the bolt has room to throw fully, and any weatherstrip that was pushing the door out of square is trimmed. Afterwards the bolt should slide with a fingertip on the thumb-turn and no shoulder on the door. Check it again at the turn of each season, since wood keeps moving with the humidity, and a two-minute screw check saves a return visit.

What affects the quote

Same fees day, night or weekend

  1. 1How many locks need opening

One front door is the simplest case. A front door plus a garage man-door, a storm door that latched and a mailbox in the lobby is a longer visit with more hardware to work through.

  2. 2Drilling and a replacement cylinder

If the cylinder has to be drilled, the quote gains the new cylinder or complete deadbolt and the labour to fit it. You are told this before the drill comes out, never after.

  3. 3Interior door or exterior door

A bathroom privacy lock or a bedroom door is generally a lighter job than an exterior deadbolt, and an old keyed interior mortise lock sits somewhere between. The quote follows the hardware, not the room.

Home Lockout Service: questions

When does a locksmith decide to drill instead of pick?

Drilling is the last rung, reached only when the cylinder has genuinely stopped cooperating. Typical reasons are a plug seized by corrosion or a failed spring, a key snapped deep inside that blocks the pins, a high-security cylinder whose anti-pick features make picking impractical, or a lock already damaged by someone's earlier attempt. The decision is explained before the drill comes out, the hole is confined to the cylinder, and replacement hardware goes in straight afterwards.

Can you also open a storm door, garage side door or backyard gate?

Yes. The same skills apply to any residential lock: a storm door that self-latched on the porch, the man-door into the garage, a shed, a gate with a padlock or a keyed latch, and a mailbox or storage locker in a condo building. Tell the locksmith about every opening involved so the right tools are in the van. Several small locks opened in one visit is common, especially after a move when keys were never handed over.

Will opening the door damage my lock?

In most residential lockouts the lock is untouched. Picking, decoding and latch tools operate the mechanism the same way your key does, so there is nothing to repair afterwards. A drill only appears when a cylinder is seized, plugged by a snapped key or engineered against picking, and you hear about that before it starts. Should it come to that, replacement hardware goes on before the locksmith leaves so you lock up normally that evening.
